Hepu County is the cultural birthplace of Beihai. As early as the unification of China under Emperor Qin, Hepu was incorporated into central governance and became an important town. For more than two thousand years, it served as a key starting point of the maritime Silk Road and continuously supplied the imperial dynasties with high-quality natural seawater pearls, once renowned as the finest pearls in the world.

Over a century ago, with the rise of Beihai Port and increasing foreign trade, merchants from both China and abroad gathered in Beihai. Countries like the United Kingdom, France, and Germany even established consulates, schools, and churches there. As the commercial and political center gradually shifted to Beihai Village, Hepu slowly faded from its role as the political hub. Nevertheless, Hepu still retains a rich cultural heritage with numerous ancient buildings and historical relics. Some of the most remarkable artifacts unearthed in Hepu have been moved to the Guangxi Museum for long-term display and are regarded as “treasures of the museum.”
