making dumplings together for chinese new year
With Chinese New Year approaching, we organized a dumpling-making activity for our international students to experience a traditional Chinese festival activity.
For this event, we prepared several types of fillings, including corn and carrot（胡萝卜玉米）, pork with water chestnut（马蹄莲肉馅）, pork with mushrooms（香菇肉馅）, and chives with egg（韭菜鸡蛋）。 Under the teacher’s guidance, students learned how to roll the wrappers, add fillings, and shape dumplings by hand. Through this hands-on experience, they discovered how dumplings are made in Chinese homes.
The Origin of Dumplings
Dumplings are one of the most iconic foods of Chinese New Year, with a history of over 2,000 years. Their shape resembles ancient Chinese gold ingots, symbolizing wealth, reunion, and good fortune for the coming year. Making dumplings together is not only about food, but also about family, sharing, and cultural tradition.
